Our first class concentrates on the finer nuances of smallsword fencing, covering both standard techniques and some that for whatever reason are less commonly used. Sometimes this happens because fencers do not know how to make them work, or it may be that some fencers do not know they exist! 

This class will add new options to your arsenal of techniques and increase the effectiveness of what you already know.

Our second class focuses on the formal duel between smallswords. The smallsword is one of the most lethal implements ever devised, but there can be no guarantee that a thrust will immediately stop the opponent. ‘Getting there first’ is not the aim. Instead, you must gain control over the situation and create circumstances where you can hit without being hit. 

Anyone can rush in and get stabby, but a good fencer does not thrust until it’s murder. 

Our third class deals with the scenario where the smallsword meets a military sword in a duel-like situation. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and victory will go to whoever exploits their own advantages whilst minimising those of the opponent. We will consider this situation from both perspectives, examining how to defeat the smallsword with a heavier weapon as well as doing the opposite.

Whether you want to be a better smallswordist or defeat one, this class will give you the tools you need.

These bouts are a chance to demonstrate your skills in front of a suitably appreciative audience. Whilst there are some elements of a duel, we are fencing with duelling weapons rather than playing at being duellists. Thus participants will earn more kudos for demonstrating fine skills and humiliating their opponent than for a performing an efficient and socially acceptable ganking.

There is an element of audience participation in these bouts. Cheers and jeers are the norm, along with bribery, corruption and perhaps a little gambling.
