The Duelling Weapons Symposium consists of masterclasses, afternoon tea, exhibition bouts and a group dinner.

Please note that details are subject to change at the discretion of the instructors. We will fine-tune and tailor the event according to the participants on the day, which may result in some adjustments to the programme.

10:00 – 10:30

Arrival and registration.

Upon arrival head through the main doors and to the left to “the Hall” to check-in. The main workshop will be in “the Nave” however we are holding an IL1 assessment prior to the workshop in this room which may still be in progress when you arrive, so please make efforts not to disturb.

The Duel and Duel-Like Situation

Introduction to the event and general housekeeping.

10:45 – 12:00

The Formal Duel

The smallsword was the standard duelling weapon throughout Europe for many years. In this session we will examine how it is best employed in the context of a one-on-one encounter in which social conventions apply.

12:15 – 13:30

The Formal Fight

‘Less formal’ duel-like situations might involve a gentleman’s hanger or a military sword such as a sabre or backsword. In this session we will examine how these weapons are best employed in a one-on-one encounter which has many of the characteristics of a duel.

13:30 – 14:15

Lunch

14:15 – 15:00

Mismatched Weapons

A duel-like situation might in which a cutting weapon is employed against a thrusting weapon. In this session we will examine how to maximise the advantages of each, and to nullify the advantages of the opponent.

15:00 – 16:45

Exhibition Bouts

In this session we offer participants the chance to show off their skills in a series of exhibition bouts in front of a suitably appreciative (or derisive) audience. Skulduggery and socially acceptable murder may be afoot.

16:45 – 17:00
